She grew up in San Bernadino, but moved to Hollywood when she was fourteen; she began acting soon after her family moved.

She was known for her smoky, husky voice, as well as for her role as a nurse on the medical drama show Emergency!

She married Jack Webb on July 16, 1947 and, after their divorce in 1954, she married Bobby Troup on December 31, 1959.
